Description

While the center section of the hospital had private rooms, most patients were cared for in one of the gender-specific wards occupying the flanking pavilions. This first-floor ward was reserved for women. With recurring epidemics of malaria, tuberculosis, typhoid, and influenza, infectious diseases were common reasons for medical admissions. While the hospital’s capacity was 100 beds, the typical census hovered around 70 patients in the 1890s.
