Abstract
Although conventional weight loss of as little as 10% can decrease the severity of comorbidities and medication requirements, weight regain is common. Because of its proven track record of safety and the lasting results, bariatric surgery is becoming a common method of treating morbid obesity. The following module discusses the 3 main types of bariatric surgery and the main aspects of preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative evaluation, including deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis, short- and long-term complications, and diabetes medication modification.
