The first record of a training school appears in the minutes of the Medical Staff meeting in 1891. In 1892 Miss Lucinda Howard, a trustee, convinced the Board that Springfield Hospital should have a School of Nursing. In May of that year, nine young women arrived to start a two year course. The Baystate School of Nursing officially closed in 1999.
